Radar's best pal, the usually hapless Vic Mirplo, had started creating art as a con, but now he's coming into money as his sculptures start to sell. When Radar needs someone to flash some cash in Vegas and play the reckless gambler so that he can get his father off the hook, he reinvents Mirplo as the ultimate high roller - the Albuquerque Turkey - and dangles him as bait.
Art fraud, casino cons, love, loyalty, and plenty of double- and triple-crosses...they all prove that the odds of what happens in Vegas staying in Vegas are about as long as Radar Hoverlander staying straight.

Reading a John Vorhaus novel is like an exercise in Taoist faith: You have no idea where the path will take you, but whatever unexpected twists and turns you encounter along the path, you know it will end up somewhere you want to be.I composed that (oh so clever) line as I was less than halfway (41%, according to my Kindle) through THE ALBUQUERQUE TURKEY.
I still agree with the basic sentiment, but I might update my analogy to state that reading a John Vorhaus novel is and act of Taoist faith because as your journey devolves into madness, you trust (hope, pray) that the Tao will deliver you sane (Tao willing), to someplace you want to be, and you will have enjoyed the ride.
Mr. Vorhaus is one of the greatest writers of comedic adventures since Douglas Adams, Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett or P.G. Wodehouse!
Lovable characters? Check.
Hate-able characters? Check.
Poetically adept use of language? Check.
Mind-blowing plot twists? CHECK!
Laugh-out-loud funny moments? CHECK!
Genuine tension creating the NEED to turn those pages as fast as the eye can scan them? Frickin' CHECK!!!
There are times in THE ALBUQUERQUE TURKEY when you think you see where the story is going. You're wrong. Always. Vorhaus is astounding at setting up your expectations, then obliterating them, often rearranging the game board so that it's an entirely new game!
But the game is always a blast -- sometimes a tense and hair-pulling blast, but always a blast -- and, naturally, we the readers are the ultimate winners!

Having found true love with fellow grafter Allie Quinn, Radar Hoverlander has sworn to settle down and go straight. Their last con has netted them more than enough to live comfortably until they figure out just what they want to do now that they've gone straight.
But their plans go crooked when Radar's father reenters his life. He hasn't seen the man in over 20 years, and now Woody is claiming that is life is on the line from a casino manager in Vegas. Since Woody is a con man in his own right, should Radar trust him, or is he being set up?
I picked up the first book in this series since the author is a friend, but I bought the second one because I enjoyed the first. And this book is another wild ride. At times near the end, I felt the plot was a little too complex for its own good, but everything did make sense in the end.
Back from the first book are Radar, Allie, and Radar's friend Mirplo. Early in the book, Mirplo is developing as a modern artist, and parts about his art and whether it was art or just another scam are very funny. All three are very likable characters. The others brought in for this story are just as real, although not all as likable.
The author has a true gift for writing, and there are some very clever turns of phrase here that will definitely make you stop and think. However, he does indulge in his "gift" of creating new words a bit too much at times as well, and in those cases I wish he'd just stick with real words.
Overall, this wild romp is recommended. Sit down and hold on because you never know where the next page is going to take you.
I had problems with the voice in THE ALBUQUERQUE TURKEY. It seemed a bit off to me, like my GPS had lost its signal. It took me a bit of time to figure out it related to word choice and some unusual phrases and dialogue. So at various points along the way, I was ready to give it up, and move on to my next read. But I’m glad I stuck with it, and that I punched through the metaphorical brick wall with both fists.
Sure, it was a bit odd, like my friend Snuffy who may have taken one too many sniffs from that superglue container I left out on the kitchen table, but like Snuffy, this novel still had its entertainment value. The plot may have seemed a bit convoluted and possibly a bit coincidental until the story truly found its direction. But the jokes were there, and so was the entertainment value, and so was the group of pranksters that staggered across the page. For starters, there was the cross-dressing absentee father figure, the nude model with the fair skin and feminine charms, the slaphappy artist with a slightly questionable work ethic and talent, and that’s just in the first half of the story.
It was always a bit of a guess as to what would happen next, so if you like being turned upside down and shaken around a bit, then this novel might hold as much promise as spiked Kool-Aid. If not, then you may want to skip out on this circus, and build your own big top in the backyard. And if that’s not enough, I’m sure you can round up a few barnyard animals to help the festivities run a little more smoothly. So to sum up, there was certainly promise, but it may have failed a bit in the execution.
